Are fun and happiness the same thing?

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

Last week was World Mental Health Day, so here are Rory's thoughts on it.

In the video, Mo Gawdat is talking to Steven Bartlett about happiness and how anyone can achieve it.

Consider these three points...

1️. Fun and happiness are two separate things.

❌ Fun is a night out, going on a rollercoaster, feeling stimulated in by a leisure activity; Mo calls these ‘the states of escape’

✅ Happiness is feeling content with your life how it is at the moment.

---

2️. Mo talks about happiness (and contentment) coming from ‘being in flow’ as much as possible.

Flow is ‘a mental state in which a person is completely focused on a single task or activity.’

At work, flow means being in the moment, focused and utilising your skills. As a result, time passes very quickly.

It's vital that you feel in flow for at least some of the time in your job.

---

3️. Mo recommends that you write a happiness list, where each point starts with ‘I feel happy when …’

This matches our approach; the first question we ask candidates is ‘what makes you happy (work related)?’

Answer these questions;

➡️ How happy are you in your role and career?

➡️ Are you using ‘fun’ to fill in the gaps in your professional life?

➡️ What interests, passions and ambitions do you have that are not being fulfilled in your current role?

Working in the right job for you has a massive impact on your mental health.

Which is why we wrote this post.

What do you think?
